Velká Amerika is a great day trip when you want to swap Prague’s streets for forest paths, dramatic cliffs and wide views. Often nicknamed the “Czech Grand Canyon,” this flooded limestone quarry lies in the Czech Karst near Karlštejn. It is approximately 4 km from Karlštejn Castle. 💡 Good to know before you go: • Take a train from Prague to Karlštejn and continue on foot. Trains from Prague run approximately every 30 minutes. • For a longer hike, add Malá Amerika and the Mexico quarry to your route by following the marked yellow trail. • On weekends and public holidays from July to October 2026, seasonal bus 878 connects Karlštejn station with the stop Mořina, odbočka lom, close to Velká Amerika. • Stay behind the barriers. The quarry itself is closed to regular visitors and can only be entered during authorised tours or special events. • Wear comfortable shoes, bring enough water and plan a full day if you want to combine the quarry with Karlštejn Castle. Kutná Hora is an easy day trip when you want to leave Prague for a few hours and see a different side of Czechia. ☀️ The town is small enough to explore on foot, but still full of places worth visiting — from quiet streets and viewpoints to some of the most unusual historical sights in the country. 💡Good to know before you go: • The trip from Prague and local public transport in Kutná Hora is part of the PID transport system, so you can buy your ticket easily in the PID Lítačka app. (Just make sure to choose the correct zones and ticket validity time in the app.) • Sedlec Ossuary is in a different part of town, so it is better to plan it at the beginning or end of your trip. • Comfortable shoes are a good idea — there are cobblestones, viewpoints and some uphill streets. • You can easily combine sightseeing with a café stop or a slow walk through the old centre.
