LIFE IN PRAGUE: Vegan and vegetarian places
By: Shriam Kaushik
Being brought up in a vegetarian family, I had a hard time finding vegetarian options in restaurants when I moved to Prague from New Delhi. It’s when my sister came to visit me in March of 2022 that I tried to find some vegan/vegetarian places to eat, since she is vegan. It turns out, there are some amazing vegan and vegetarian places in Prague, so I’m going to suggest them to you!
Paloverdebistro (Žitná 45, 110 00 Nové Město)
A cute vegan Bistro that’s a 4 minute walk from I.P.Pavlova tram stop. This bistro will give you everything from Kimchi Omelette which is my favourite, to an English breakfast, to Lasagna and even Hummus bowls! The variety of food never ceases to amaze me. The atmosphere of the Bistro is cosy and cute with fairy lights and plants all over the place. There are also art books on bookshelves that you can take and read/look through to have an amazing time. But make sure you reserve a place before you go because it is always busy.
Mamacoffee
Although this café has many branches all over prague, the one I went to and loved is in Vodickova. It is a 2-minute walk from the Vodickova Tram stop. It is a two-story café with places to sit and eat on the 2nd story while they serve coffee on the 1st story. The cappuccino I had at this café was one of my favourites but they also serve Avocado toast, Pancakes, Carrot cakes, Hummus bowls, and even Dumplings! The atmosphere of this café is very chill and calm. You can find people just sitting and reading their books while having coffee or having a nice brunch with their friend. The best thing about this place though were the plants and the space in the café. Although it is not a vegan or vegetarian café, it sure does have so many vegan and vegetarian options!
Maitrea restaurant (Týnská ulička 1064/6, 110 00 Staré Město)
This vegetarian restaurant is a 7-minute walk from the Vodickova Tram stop and has the most unique vibes. Inside the restaurant you can find cool lights, Buddha statue and even fountains as their interior is designed in the style of Feng shui. I tried their thai red curry with tofu and vegetables served along with jasmine rice which felt like comfort food to me. Their popular dishes are Vegetarian Goulash, Quesadilla, Asian wok with crispy spicy seitan spring, and so many more. The atmosphere of this restaurant is very zen and almost spiritual. Be sure to reserve a place before you visit!
Chutnej (Letohradská 755/50, 170 00 Praha 7-Holešovice)
This vegan restaurant is a 6-minute walk from Kamenicka and is near the Letna park. They have a branch in Vinohrady as well. It is truly a very unique restaurant in terms of the menu and even their dishes. Their lunch menu is different each day of the week and comes as a set of soup, a main dish and pizza, but that is not all! I tried their Tomato soup with lentils which was again a comfort food for me, along with a black crust pizza and a burger. Its safe to say that all their food was amazing! The atmosphere of this restaurant is very chill with plants all around.
