Hungry in Uni? I got you! – Places to grab a quick bite close to the University
We’ve all experienced it, haven’t we? Classes almost back-to-back and the stomach is in desperate need of some fuel to keep going. Whether you have or not, I’ve been there quite a few times!
Now, the quickest fix would be to find a vending machine, grab a protein bar or some chips and run. Pretty efficient choice, but sometimes, you need something with more substance. Let’s say you have about 20 minutes on your hands – without further ado, let’s go get something to eat!
Inside the University
The campus canteen (Menza – AV Gastrocentrum) offers a variety of Czech and international meals at a subsidized cost, provided you have your ID with you. The university also houses the Menza Italska which, as the name suggests, offers Italian food – including 5 different types of pizza. The Umbrella Bar is hard to miss as it located right at the entrance of the New Building (NB), go check it out! Also, for the health-conscious, the university also offers healthy food – Zdravá výživa!
Outside the University
Now we get to the interesting part! Ranked according to distance and accessibility, we have –
1. Miner’s
Distance – < 100m from the University
What’s on the Menu – Hot and Cold Beverages, Bagels, Sandwiches, Scrambled Eggs, Quinoa
Prices – Between 100 to 200 Crowns
Ambience – Less seating, but great view from outside seating area
This establishment – located a hop, skip and a jump away from the University – I would describe as cozy, a little cramped, with nominal prices. The hot chocolate I had here was delicious! The coffee is pretty good, although a little too light for my taste. They also offer bagels, scrambled eggs, quinoa, etc. It is mostly crowded, especially during peak hours, but they do have benches set up outside for a quick dine-and-dash.
2. Buns and Croissants
Distance – 160m from the University entrance
What’s on the Menu – Waffles, croissants, burgers
Prices – Between 100 to 200 Crowns
Ambience – Rustic and casual
This is my go-to for the unpredictable hunger pangs. They offer waffles, croissants and burgers. The croissants are perfect for a quick grab ‘n go, and the burgers are delicious! The prices are justified by the freshness of their food and overall, I would rate this place very highly. Do try it out!
3. Golden egg
Distance – 160m walk from the University entrance
What’s on the Menu – Burgers, desserts and cold beverages
Prices – Between 200 to 300 Crowns
Ambience – Great view and has outdoor seating as well
While the prices are a bit steep, the ambience that golden egg offers is awesome! The burgers do look a bit gourmet, but the taste of the food is great. The benches at the back are great for a meal with friends or family.
